I got a little free time this afternoon, decided that a kayak trip was in order. I stopped in at The Fly Fisherman in Titusville for some new flyline, and off I went. The weather around Peacocks Pocket looked the best. The rain had just past and cooled everything down nicely. Wind was almost nonexistant. I paddled towards the 2 islands, the activity in the water was slow at first, then began to pick up. I kept seeing fish finning at the surface. Originally I thought maybe it was just mullet, but something just seemed odd about them. I cast a camo color unweighted Gulp at them and soon was able to identify the specie. Black drum, everywhere. In thigh deep water, not tailing, but lazily finning at the surface. I wound up with four to about 11 lbs. Also got a couple dink trout and a 26 or so inch red to round out the drum slam. My only regret was that I couldn't get them to eat a fly. They wouldn't even touch cut bait, only Gulp jerk worms. I only got pictures of a couple before my camara died. ![]() |
