Fishing San Diego, California

recently my wife kidnapped me to celebrate our 10th year wedding anniversary. i didn't have a clue until the day before our departure.
we were dropped off at the airport and a couple flights later we arrived in san diego, california.
It was a whirlwind tour...ali and korine put us up in style. from the time we got there til the day we left every moment was spent experiencing southern California's diverse culture... the food was incredible, the landscapes were so 3d compared to florida. we got to enjoy a full day fishing off mexico knocking fish species off our list. many of the fish we caught were later transformed into fish tacos. the san diego zoo was pretty awesome, as was the birch aquarium. we ate, drank and walked around "day at the docks" which is a local boat, tackle, art show. i'm not very good with words so i will let the pictures do the talking.

fishing trip:
fishing southern california, mexico with ali, jason and cory.

catching bait was pretty easy compared to florida.

sardine

anchovy

boat wrap:
neat traveling all the way to california, then going offshore mexico and seeing artwork we have done.

cornado island

we caught a bunch of species, i'm still working on all the names...i think i'm close on most of these.

lingcod

sculpin

starey

san dab

lincod

sculpin

ocean perch

ling

ali with sculpin, delicious!

bloodydecks.com members, friends fishing the same area.

lingcod and stary caught in 175 feet of water.

chuckle head? i forget real name...

POKE mix! wow good mixed with the fresh bonito.

later stopped and looked at kelp. wow, cool stuff!

looking forward to going back and diving some kelp forests.

crustaceans that was on kelp, not sure what it is.

the clean up.

my new favorite meal, fish tacos.

birch aquarium, california. ali and jason checking out the kelp forest exhibit.

longnosed hawfish

clamming, cold and wet.

still fun though!

Day at the Docks:
very cool, chill day strolling around, drinking, eating and just experiencing california's fishing culture.
got some local artwork from "krotch" and bill boyce. met so many great people from bloodydecks.com.

bill boyce

cool stroller

bloody decks booth

the long range fishing fleet.

juvenile black sea bass

to be continued...

Looks boring. You broke off our Thursday evening fishing trip for that? I'm hurt.

catalina offshore products

we met many characters in cali. ali seems to be the mayor of san diego.

one morning we got a full tour of catalina offshore products, a seafood market. ali's friend tommy took as back stage and pick out a bunch of good stuff for our evenings sushi dinner.

we checked out everything...incredible.

tommy rolling us out some fresh scallops.

fresh halibut.

explaining where everything comes from.

omg...ate raw scallops mixed in spicey mayo and masago for dinner, sooo goood.

small boat used to help them unload fresh sea urchin. urchins are cleaned and processed on site.

big scallop shell.

live abalone

tommy writing up all our goods.

price list

some of our extras.

check out the shrimp.

more shrimp

corvina

black sea bass

live crabs

we had a great friggin time hanging out with tommy.
