Sarasota Bay: Weekending 8/1/09

With the heat of August decending on us, finding the right tides to fish are crucial to find redfish and snook in Northern Sarasota Bay. By deciding the right tide, you do not waste time and body fluids poling the flats in the intense heat. Calm conditions this allowed for some great sight casting opportunities on fly. On the lower end of the tides, redfish were sticking out like sore thumbs over the lush grass flats near Palma Sola Bay. The reds were really copper in color and were looking for a fly with a very soft presentation. Olive Sea Ducers were #1 on the list followed by the old reliable Dupree's Spoon Fly. By fishing the lower end of the tides (+1.0 or lower), sight fishing is much easier. But with the shallow conditions and the thick grass a 9 foot, knotless, 16 pound tapered tippet (Orvis Mirage Fluorocarbon) is a must. The reds and snook tended to gravitate towards the deeper potholes on the lower end of the tide. Most reds caught were in the 23-26 inch range with one nice 29 inch specimen taken. A few nice trout (18-24 inch range) were sighted in the thick grass flats but were too spooky to get on fly.
Tarpon are off the beaches and have been taking toad fly patterns. Popular colors are chartreuse/yellow and black/purple. Finding a line that they are traveling on the beach is your best bet, then wait until they come to you.
