Blair Wiggins Inshore Slam

Today despite a grey sky and howling wind we fish Capt. Blair Wiggins inshore slam tournament benefiting the World Skin Cancer Foundation. The event was held at Rusty's at the Port in Port Canaveral, Florida.

The Team: IrlyRiser and myself (BoldWater)

Captains Meeting: Rusty's Seafood Bar

We got an early start launching from Kelly Park and headed south.

If we had not been on a mission to fish the tournament i'm not sure we would have ventured out.

We blind fished exclusively with skitter walks and Berkley Gulp jigs (vaders).

Brandon started us out with 22 inch trout.

I could only muster short dink trout.

As we approached the lee side of an island, Brandon fired his top water plug down the shoreline and the water erupted with a 23" to 25" snook. Unfortunately snook one broke his 10 pound test leader meant for gator trout at the boat.

I continued jigging for a redfish to no avail.

20 yards down the shoreline on some old tree limbs, snook 2 blasts the Rapala...this one is about 30 inches! Cheers were soon snuffed out by the black cloud of line breaking disgust...as the snook found a place to hide. SNAP! POW!

Our spirits not to be broken Brandon, tied on his last Skitter Walk with an even heavier leader. 3 or 4 cast later a huge hole is left in the water where his plug used to walk. A 50-60 pound tarpon explodes into the air. As the the Tarpon neared the boat...SNAP! POW! He got twisted in the 10 pound line. Once free we watched him jump several more times throwing the plug.

Both of us had a few more strikes and we were off to another spot looking for redfish.

A couple more trout, ladyfish and jack crevale on Black Gulps.

3 small redfish got mugshots and we were off to our last spot to hopefully fulfill both our slams. We knew our quarry would not be large but they would fill open spots on our tournament score cards.

Rods were rigged with DOA shrimp as we neared a row of canal docks. Tarpon were every where but we ignored them to finish our goal.

2 docks down the line and my (dink) slam was complete.

After that I pulled my bait out of a small tarpon's mouth and jumped another small snook. With our last 30 minutes we tried desperately to get IrlyRiser his snook but it never happened.

Weigh in was a blast, we ate a great dinner and my inshore slam was awarded with a second place trophy.

All in all an incredibly fun day on the water with some memories of the best top water bites I have ever witnessed.

Brandon was congratulated by the Spanish Fly himself later that evening.

or someone trying on their halloween costume.
