cold water Fish kill Merritt Island, Florida snook and more

January 9, 2010 Brevard County along with the entire state of Florida experienced some of the coldest temperatures on record.

With the weather here to stay for a few more days before things begin to heat back up, Tyler Shealey (castawaycustoms) and I hiked the local ponds go exploring a little. We found a few different species of fish laying on the banks. Many fish were already dead while others were not long for this world. We saw myan cyclids, common snook, swordspine snook, fat snook, tarpon, ladyfish, and mojarra. Hopefully some of the stunned fish can hang on a few more days until the sun warms the water up a bit.

Here's a video we shot.

It was a bummer to see all of those fish. Hopefully some research can be done with samples of the fish to learn something out of this. It's not like we can stop it from freezing, but maybe something good can come out of it.
